Day 41: Departure

25th July

I arrived late at work today as I had to make an appointment with the doctor foremost. I was sick but was reluctant to obtain a sick leave as today would be my last day. I came into office today prepared to tackle my final task at aaza.

Office Library

As today was my final day at aaza, I set out to accomplish what I have been assigned to do since the very first day. It was obvious that I would not be able to complete this task but hopefully I would be able to reduce the burden of filing the catalogs after I leave. I started labeling necessary folders following different categories and made sure the labeling was colored to keep things more organized. However, due to the unnecessary system I have prolonged the task even further and ended up going home without accomplishing much.

Finally I was assigned to work on some photoshop work. Mr. Azhar would be presenting some designs and requested for a nice colored drawing. I managed to pick up a few tricks from Wafie and will probably find it useful in the future.

Progress Report

I presented my progress report and timesheet marking the end of my final day at aaza. Going through the report, Mr. Azhar realized that I had indeed partaken in a great number of projects. Small talk came right after. Finally he presented me with my check with an added bonus of RM100 from the contract. We shook hands a few times before I finally walked out of his office.

Farewell salute

My farewell was a short and brief one since it was a small firm. Got a present from my colleagues unwrapped even till now, shook hands with everyone and exchanged information.

As I entered into the office, I comfortably sat on Hady’s seat again as I heard news that he extended his sick leave.

Bukit Tunku Project

I started work past noon on the project and only updated the bathroom layout plans. The layering on the project was a little out of place and with Amir’s help I managed to correct part of it before it was time to go home.

Progress Report

I spent half of the day working on the progress report which was supposed to be presented today but Mr. Azhar left home from work earlier than I had expected. Therefore, I assume the report presentation would be held tomorrow.

Farewell lunch

Mr. Azhar treated us to chicken rice in a stall nearby the firm. Not bad a choice. We had small talks and laughs. I am grateful indeed for the free treat. We had chicken rice, some add-ons and fruits.

Honestly I feel heavy hearted as tomorrow will be my last day at the firm. I can proudly claim my first ever working experience is great.

Day 39: Computer upgrade

23rd July

Arrived at work and found out that Hady applied for sick leave today. That means I get to use his computer; a faster, bigger, better and slimmer computer. In an unrelated matter, my thumb drive is at home plugged into my CPU . . . which means I have to redo what was needed today from what had been done yesterday.

Since I left my thumb drive back home, I had to redo the M&E and piping layout for the Bukit Tunku project. The ordeal lasted till noon and the task was completed. After lunch break, there were multiple printing errors and that took up till about 1500.

Office library

I continued on the office library’s filing system after the Bukit Tunku Project. Not much time was spent on this task however as it was boring . . . obviously.

I made a prank call to Hady today with my spare phone. It worked well which means; I am a professional prank caller and . . . I am so screwed tomorrow. Mr. Azhar requested for a report for the past two months tomorrow. That makes two times the screwness I am about to experience.

Day 38: Office boy

22nd July

Learned my lesson from the previous day and brought coins worth three days of parking. After I paid for my parking, I set my alarm timer and slept. Woke up a few minutes later; a minute before the alarm rang.

Amin Rafie Project

I started the day by tracing demolished lines on the submission drawings. The process took up some time as drawings were small and I wanted a thorough job. I stopped at the third set of drawings and was requested to work on another project instead which was deemed more urgent.

Bukit Tunku Project

Spent my time with the M&E layout on this project. Determining the position of the switches, telephone lines, astro lines, mechanical ventilation and lightings. This is to ensure that the client would be satisfied with the positioning before construction works start.

Office Library

Ever since I entered this firm, I was told that I was supposed to work on the filing of the office library. It never happened until today as Mr. Azhar realized that I am ending training this week. I had to look up our library with tonnes of brochures and sort them out according to specific components. The library is huge and I probably will be continuing this task tomorrow. . .

Working on the office library's filing system was not exactly the ending I had in mind in this firm but someone has to do it. Besides working on the library, I made drinks for everyone; to be more precise, I made a drink and filled a jug therefore accessible to anyone who wants to drink sweet 'Rosella'.

I forgot to grab coins one the way to work thus panic ensured me when I arrive at work only to rely on the small change in my car. FORTUNATELY, I had just enough; not a cent to more or less. Thank the heavens. . .

Kota Damansara Project

I started working on the As-Built drawings assigned to me by Mr. Azhar. As I managed to get an hours work done, the computer failed me and shut down without prior warning. It was early and I thought I could redo what I did, I did just that. After completing what I did earlier, I progressed further when the computer failed me again. It was different this time however as the computer was stuck at blurred screen. I restarted and decided to work on it one last time. The outcome was the same as I progressed further then I had previously.

Amin Rafie Project

I started manual rendering the Amin Rafie Project drawings required for submission. The ammount of work on this is nothing compared to Tayton View Project so I just let my hand do the working while my mouth was elsewhere doing something else.

After numerous failed attempts do work on the Kota Damansara Project, I decided to walk around the office on idle mode. I came across Amir working and decided to help him issue a letter. I had writers block and decided to use the main server to access the internet. I somehow managed to completely wipe out the internet access in the office without touching anything relevant. Amir spent a few minutes trying to get the world wide web back into our hands. It seems I can infect a computer by just a mere touch; my computer is on its worse case of lagging since the history of mankind, Amir's computer has slowed down drastically till opening Adobe Photoshop takes almost thirty minutes, Hady's computer is infected but does not show signs yet and the main server's internet access is gone. . . which means OUR internet access.

As I walked into the office today, Mr. Azhar asked if I knew of any printing shop in the vicinity of his office. The spur of the question was prior to me showing him of Win’s Art.

Amin Rafie Project

Slight amendments to the 3D model by introducing a window to a walkway which I had missed out. I then had to print an image for certain angles which would be presented to the client.

Kota Damansara Project

I did not immediately start on the project instead I used up my time searching for the approved drawing and As-Built drawings. Mr. Azhar gave me brief instructions on the project.

I will only be working half day today. Time was short and the changes I did on the Amin Rafie Project were instantaneously. As for the Kota Damansara Project, I did not start as with the short amount of time I wouldn’t be able to complete much. So I spent my time drinking water, making coffee (for myself), starting up the printer which was acting weird and disturbing my colleagues. Hady found out I had used his account to randomly add friends while he was not away yesterday and using his account to hunt for potential female/ gay friends.

I got my guitar into the office today as I haven’t been practicing for a week and there’s a lesson after work. I had planned to practice during break hour and free time.

Although I have completed my design proposals, I have yet to present them to Mr. Azhar the day before. Today I presented the designs and he returned a few comments and amendments I should work on. I keep reminding myself that no initial designs will ever be accepted and constant changes in the field are bound to happen. A proposed metal railing was then substituted with a timber rail for the balcony area.

Kota Damansara Project

As from the inspection the day before, I had noted a few changes compared to the site and approved drawings. Apparently this process is to determine As-Built. Before I complete training I would have to work on the As-Built drawings on the project. This would involve constant traveling to the site and the office and possible lack of sleep. Today I spent time searching for the latest drawings on the project which I could use.

My boss saw my guitar case today and asked if it was mine. One thing led to the other and he had a go with my guitar. Surprisingly, he was awesomely good compared to anyone I’ve seen. His rhythm, timing and composure were great. It did not take long for me to admire the man even more. He had a few laughs of his own then started to resume work.

Bukit Tunku Project

I managed to complete the design proposals today after working on it for several hours. As I completed it, Amir had asked me to print a few drawings as requested from Mr. Azhar. There were a few problems with the layering which was discovered after the drawings were printed out. Amir amended the problems while I watched.

Kota Damansara Project/ Site Visit

There was a site visit for the Kota Damansara site visit today as part of the As-Built procedure. A procedure where the architect unofficially inspects the building to determine if it is built according to the drawings and the changes on-site compared to the drawings. Before leaving for the site visit, I was required to print an A3 sized drawings on the project. Because I couldn’t find the latest drawings among the numerous drawings in the computer, I ended up having to carry along the only hardcopy of the project to site. At site, I was required to do the inspection instead. The client and Mr. Azhar left early for a coffee break while I continued inspecting the house. During inspections I had total control over the situation as I was the only ‘architect’ there and thus my position was the highest compared to the contractor and the worker.

As I completed inspections of the house, it was already 1600. I was given prior permission to leave early after the site visit. There I stood in a dilemma either to return to office or to bum at the nearest shopping mall; The Curve. The choice was obvious; I went to The Curve and slept.

I resumed work on the deco designs coming up with three proposals of my own. It was when I was working halfway on my third design proposal that Mr. Azhar came over and had a disapproving look upon setting sights on my design. He came up with two proposals of his own right after and I had to follow it up with a 3D model. The designing of the art deco took up loads of my time with maximum rejection.

I was brought back into this project temporarily to make some changes to the columns upon request from the client. The initial change looked weird and Mr. Azhar came up with another design idea for me to amend in Sketch Up.

Dead tired today but didn’t manage to take a quick nap as Mr. Azhar left office later then usual today. Numerous rejection on the Bukit Tunku Project killed my mood a little today but it would probably be looking like this in the working world, so better be prepared now.

Day 32: Gold card member

The traffic congestion today was at its worst. As I heard over the radio station, a few roads within KL were blocked causing a chain effect leading to the biggest obstruction I have ever experienced. I arrived at workplace an hour late and it was raining. Not a very good sign if you are superstitious.

I continued working on the Bukit Tunku Project. I came up with an idea of using a design similar to Ar. Bjarke Ingel of tiles to produce an image from afar. A second proposal was to create a scenic structural landscape using tiles. However, I was told to produce working drawings for the ideas to be presented to the contractor and a 3D model for the client. As the computer was not being cooperative, I had numerous delays and lost the mood to continue working.

Company Lunch

We had a company lunch today initiated by me. I wanted something we could do together and talk while everyone is around. Therefore I suggested pizza and with the gold card from Domino’s, large scale food purchasing became less of a burden. I told every one of my plans including the boss and the mood suddenly became much more cheerful today. When lunch time came, I brought the food into the meeting room and all seven of us sat down and enjoyed four different pizzas, garlic bread, BBQ chicken and gas drinks. All of us enjoyed ourselves and talked crap and joked throughout the meal.

It’s another two weeks to go before I finish my training and Mr. Azhar is already talking about holding a company lunch for my farewell. The others were more interested in the traditional farewell bash instead and were still holding talks on that. Mr. Azhar’s car was in the workshop due to suspension problems and I sent him to the workshop. On the way I introduced him to Win’s Art and he was overjoyed to find a shop so close to his firm. As I got back to the office, I started my recently acquired favorite activity in the office; sleep.

As usual I arrived at work early and wanted to begin my routine task of reading. To my horror I couldn’t find my book along with my ten dollar Russian currency bookmark. When I got into my office, I found my book . . . lying beside the keyboard.

Resuming from where I left off previously, I continued the art deco designs which still lags the computer. Although not as heavy as the previous day but it managed to keep me at bay. In the end, I decided to shift my attention to the Koi pond which is less of a burden to the computer. After completing the pond area, I changed my interest back to the designs. I decided to hold that area and focus on it at home as it takes much less a time to work on a design from home.

Tayton View Project

The lagging on the computer while I was working on the Bukit Tunku Project became unbearable and I decided to do something more productive. After touching up on the final rendering for the submission drawings, I was done.

Road Trip

I did not want to start on the designs for the Bukit Tunku Project as the lag would just make it pointless. As I was walking around in the office, I overheard a conversation among my colleagues. They needed to get some submission drawings printed as soon as possible. I offered to drive over to the shop and get the drawings as I was itching to get out of the office. I used Amir’s car. Traveling with a car other then your own with the freedom to drive as fast and as dangerously as possible was great.

I missed breakfast again and had to get food at the stall in front of my office. As I was walking towards the office, I saw Amir and we entered together.

The 3D model I worked on earlier was becoming more of a burden to the computer then I had imagined. However, I continued to ignore the lag and resumed work like any other day. I started into building up a few designs and pasted the repeated patterns to produce an art deco. After two hours of working on the project, the computer started to lag. It was quite common for my computer to lag for a prolong period of time so I decided to wait it out. Thirty minutes later and it was still lagging. An hour later and no change at all. Two hours later and. . .

Tired of waiting for my computer to recover, I started manually rendering submission drawings for this project. As I got onto the fine print, I had to use the color pencils instead and worked my way until the day ended.

Apparently, Amir’s computer also had technical difficulties therefore he could not get anything done. He spent the entire day breathing down someone else’s back.

Day 29: Low battery

9th July

The past few days had been hectic and I think I’ve almost reached my limit. As soon as I got up from bed, I was dead tired as though I did a hundred pushups on the spot. I drove to office feeling tired and sleepy and upon arrival, I slept in the car. Woke up soon after, went into the office and resumed work despairingly.

Started work on the construction drawings. The changes were minimal but consumed a lot of time as the construction drawings were hard to read. Once the drawings here amended, I resumed design proposals for Spanish/ Malay styled deco. I started the designs on AutoCAD and after coming up with two designs which I am not proud of, I imported the file into Sketch Up and started patching things up into a 3D model.

After lunch hour my boss did not return to the office as he had a meeting on the Kota Damansara Project which he was supposed to bring me along. I guess he saw me occupied, tired and moody and decided not to. I worked on the Bukit Tunku Project until I could not work anymore and decided to sleep instead. Yes, you heard me right. I shamelessly slept at the entrance of the office where there was a comfortable couch; in full view of all my colleagues, secretary and possible clients. Work hour ended and my colleagues woke me up, I was still tired and doubtful if I could drive.

Day 28: Overload

I woke up and it was pouring heavily outside. Not the perfect start to a day as I missed my breakfast and got soaked in the rain. As I reached my office, I remembered the stall by the road which my boss recommended. It was tasted good yet too much oil in every single dish

Amin Rafie Project

Amendments on the pre-existing building for the Amin Rafie Project came underway. The drawings were about completed so I didn’t have much to do except changes to produce a drawing worth submitting. Soon after completing the drawings, I saved the file to which will be passed on to Jafirul for compilation tomorrow.

Bukit Tunku Project

After a meeting with the client, Mr. Azhar informed me of a few changes which he would like me to get started on soon after I’m done with the Amin Rafie Project. The amendments included an additional design to the handrail, window changes and the decorative elements on the retaining wall. I did not manage to complete the design changes on the retaining wall and was interrupted do make some drawing changes to the plan and elevations of the project.

I think my boss is THE architect to start industrial training with. He gave me so much although I returned so little; encouragement, information, secrets and free lunch. I could feel the compassion, excitement and enthusiasm in ever word he spoke. He shared his mistakes made as an architect and experience learned from it without concealing weakness in the profession which I find to be truly admirable. In that brief meeting, I had a newfound respect for my boss and saw him close to a substitute fatherly figure. If I was given three wishes, one would be for him to be able to expand and strengthen aaza.

Today was just going to be another day, except for the matter that I had to prepare a report and present it to Mr. Azhar by 1700 today. As I entered the office, I presented Mr. Azhar with a stack of brochures I got from ArhiDex which he might find helpful in updating his library.

Amin Rafie Project

I browsed through the current status of the Amin Rafie Project as soon as I sat on the chair. What was left for me to do on the Amin Rafie Project is to complete the drawings to the pre-existing building. In the process of the drawings, Amir pointed out a few errors in the drawings and I set out to amend them. By the end of the day, the drawings were complete and I had to print them out for further inspection before submission.

Bukit Tunku Project

As I was working on the Amin Rafie Project, Mr. Azhar came over to me and notified me of the few design changes which I was required to work on before the weekend. The client wanted the windows changed to a certain design and I had to input some floral designs into the 3D model before presenting to the client.

Progress Report

The discussion with Mr. Azhar regarding my progress in the firm was held today after numerous delays on my part. The ‘report’, was a method used by Mr. Azhar to calculate the productivity of his employees; a time sheet stating the hours spent on a project. As we went through the time sheet, Mr. Azhar mentioned more responsibilities and involvement on a few projects which includes discussion with a structural engineer, inquiry to manufacturers, layout on site and material allocation for the UM Project. Besides that, Mr. Azhar talked about the industry and much more which made me feel almost like a family the firm.

My colleagues are starting to mark their calendars for my departure from the firm. It was not a farewell party they were planning but the traditional ‘bash the leaver’ party. The day went smoothly with us concentrating on our projects, however there were occasionally talks on torture methods they could try out on me. Out of pity they gave me a choice; treat them to lunch or receive the traditional ‘bash the leaver’ event. I choose the latter choice.

Word of wisdom from Amir, I always thought that an elevation comes first then would the cross section follow. But after I noticed the mistakes in my drawings, I could understand and relate to Amir's statement.

Day 26: Discovery

I had just found out that one of my acquaintance is working in the same area as I am. With haste I set a date. It would be refreshing to spend my lunch break with friend in the same vicinity for once in a while. It has been six weeks since I started working at aaza and it I have had the same company for lunch ever since.

The scheduled meeting with the client was brought forward to noon which gave me approximately an hours notice before Mr. Azhar would require my work. I had to rush on the numerous design changes before then in the short time span. I managed to complete and print the task on time and handed it over to Mr. Azhar.

Amin Rafie Project

I started the pre-existing building plans as soon as Amir told me my previous drawing lacked details and pointed out the errors I made. After going through the changes I would have to amend, I started work immediately. Before I left the office, I saved the file on the desktop just in case Jafirul or Amir would need the file; although not completed yet.

Since I did not join my colleagues for lunch due to a prior engagement, they started being suspicious and inspected every inch of me. They asked numerous questions and pointed every irregularity on my appearances. So basically the joke of the day was my rendezvous with a certain someone until the bigger joke of the day came; almost all of our active project will meet the deadline in less then 48 hours. The timing was perfect when Mr. Azhar mentioned it, he told my colleagues when there was an hour left before closing time. Therefore:

The outcome would not in anyway look good as none of the projects were fully prepared for a submission. After the boss left, a series of jokes came from part of their frustration.

Bukit Tunku Project

I was given the task of designing the balcony area of the master bedroom which will include a walkway and a Koi fish pond. The designs were simple as I referred to a detailed section drawing of another project. Besides that, an area surrounding the ground floor needed some design touch up. The design were to sit on a retaining wall therefore I added pebble slabs for the proposed design.

Amin Rafie Project

Minor change to the porch area. The client wanted the roof to span quite a distance therefore I had to amend the 3D model and added columns to support the new length. There were changes to the doors as well which involves removing a couple of frames.

Tayton View Project

Started working on the submission drawings again. Not much needed to be done from where I left off therefore I managed to finish up my part fast.

As I was working on the Tayton View Project, Amir and Jafirul encouraged me to take my sweet time and work at the slowest pace I could ever achieve. Mr. Azhar came over to tell me that the meeting with the client was brought forward by one day which means I have to work a day faster then what I originally planned.

It seems Mr. Azhar has placed a huge burden on my shoulders. He wants me to design the interior layout for the Bukit Tunku Project and produce a 3D image for the presentation to the client by Friday. I think it slipped his mind that I will be attending DATUM on Friday. Interior designing in less than three days on a lagging computer would need superhuman luck. To top it all the client is no ordinary person; she is the daughter of our dear ex-prime minister Tun Hussein Onn .

As I entered the office, my colleagues were deciding how they could spend their wages. They did ask me how much I had left as well since they knew I spent a huge portion of mine on books the previous day.

I started by building up elevation drawings for the pre-existing building which will soon be demolished but is still needed for the submission stage. As I completed the drawings, I moved on to the 3D model which had changes to be made from the previous day. I mended the windows according to Mr. Azhar's specifications and later did the layout for the building.

The post payday syndrome continued until lunch hour. As we got out of the office, my colleagues had a sudden desire to have something different for lunch. We went around in circles asking each other for suggestions but remained standing on the walkway for a couple of minutes. Finally they decided on KFC (there goes my pledge of avoiding fast food for the entire semester break). When we got back to the office, work proceeded as usual until the boss left. My colleagues went on a partial rampage and started playing hide and seek, robber and cop and shooting invisible bullets at each other much to my amusement, they were exactly like little children .

Mr. Azhar said this to me when I explained that I chose stainless steal for handrails of the Amin Rafie bungalow. He reasoned that metal as a conductor has a vast change in temperature which might make the occupants feel uneasy. If the temperature of the handrail would drop vastly, an elderly would probably get a shock from touching the handrail. He suggested that I use timber instead.

I spent almost the entire day manually rendering several sheets for the submission drawings. I will be continuing from where I left off tomorrow.

Payday

I got my first paycheck today and after the boss left the office, I immediately rushed to a bookstore I visited earlier and purchased books I was interested in which I did not have enough money a couple of hours ago. I now truly understand the power of payday; with money comes great responsibilities.

Week 05: Gaining momentum

Day 18

I was introduced to the Tayton View Project and given the task to manually render several sheets of drawings for submission. The task didn't turn out so bad as coloring was one of my favorite pastimes when I was young. Besides that, yet another excitement broke out in the office and temporarily stopped production. Our office caught a minor fire.

Day 19

Today I focused primarily on the Tayton View Project. Mr. Azhar wanted the drawings to be submitted by the coming week if possible and since I had nothing else to do, I volunteered for the task.

Day 20

There was an urgent task of completing a schematic drawing for the UNISEL project by today. After receiving the dimensions from Mr. Azhar, I got on to work and completed the diagrams before our scheduled company lunch.

Day 21

I was assigned a new task of designing a pagola for the Amin Rafie Project today. As I was searching through some design inspiration from architectural reviews, I was disturbed to produce drawing plans for the Kota Damansara Project. Deadline for the UM Project's submission drawings is less then 24 hours and my colleagues are doing OT. Luckily I am not part of it.

Day 22

Made changes to the boundary wall on the Amin Rafie Project. The computer I am currently using has reached its limit and takes quite a long time to process any command. I did not manage to complete the wall before I checked out from the office.

Amin Rafie Project

I started work on the designing of the pagola. Halfway through, I decided to re-modify the coping and the connection portion of the building that will connect the pre-existing building and the new building. I browsed through several references within the company's library for an inspiration. As soon as I started, Mr. Azhar gave me some of his design ideas for me to use.

Kota Damansara Project

Had to do some quick remodeling on the Kota Damansara Project for Mr. Azhar. He wanted a clean drawing plan for the relocation of the power supply. Not much work done on this task. I was swift and direct.

Today everything was pretty much routine for me. I can't say the same for my colleagues though. They were given unreasonable deadlines and everyone was pretty pissed off for a moment or two. But the usual jokes came about occasionally. At lunch, Amir was once again talking about the corruption in the industry; this time in detail and how pissed he was. Before I checked out of the office, my colleagues were still working on a project with the deadline due in less then 24 hours.

Amin Rafie Project

I started remodeling the coping to make look aesthetically alluring. The changes were minor but I was somewhat pleased with the changes. I then shifted my attention to the designing of the pagola. Sketches produced at initial stage yet nothing was confirmed.

UNISEL Project

I was dragged away from the Amin Rafie Project by Mr. Azhar. He needed a schematic drawing on the UNISEL Project produced as soon as possible and decided to assign me to the task. Fairly simple task, all I had to do was to produce a drawing of a hostel which Mr. Azhar had already produced dimensions. I completed it in a few minutes, way before what Mr. Azhar expected but I did not show him the drawings until later.

Company lunch

Today marked the 100th anniversary for aaza. There was a company lunch to celebrate the occasion. Mr. Azhar even invited his previous staff and the fifteen of us dined at the Tropicana Gold & Country Club. It might be out of instinct or randomly assigned, but I was given the camera for the event by Mr. Azhar. The food was disgusting, especially the bread pudding. Tasted like wet bread. Mr. Azhar's previous staff were very friendly and I got acquainted faster then expected.

As all seven of us boarded Mr. Azhar's car for our lunch, Mr. Azhar mentioned a few plans involving a company badminton match, bowling match and more lunch treats. Badminton; the mere mention of a competition sent my blood pumping. Can these people really play? We had our meal, met new people and headed back to the office. As I passed the drawings to Mr. Azhar, it was all smooth sailing as I did not touch any work right after.

The 3D model was completed and ready to be printed. After printing a few screen shots for the client, I ignored the project and got onto another task. Mr. Azhar came in the office later in the evening and asked me to design the pagola for the bungalow and slight changes to the 3D model. I would have to include specifications into the 3D model and contact suppliers for the materials already.

Tayton View Project

Since I had already completed the Amin Rafie Project, I focused myself a new task; continue manually rendering submission drawings. The whole process took a short time for me to color the few areas of the drawings. Amir then handed the task of completing the whole rendering process to me. After explanation of the task I got onto work.

It was evening when my colleagues received their payment slip, without the actual payment. All hell broke loose as the usual jokes and relaxed atmosphere came from the matter. While I was working on the Tayton View Project, Amir noticed a few mistakes in the submission drawings. I would have to amend it while rendering with the help of a razor, pen and ruler. My colleagues were certain that I would not be able to finish the rendering by Friday. I smell a bet coming along. There are 33 set of drawings; with ten A0 drawings within each set. Do you think I can make it?

The portion of the bungalow which I have designed looked weird so I decided to amend it. I have yet to notify Jafirul and Amir of the latest changes. After the changes were made, I took a few snapshots of different angles for preparation to the client.

Tayton View Project

I was brought into this project which involved Hady and Wafie. The project involves a shopping mall and is considered one of my firm's major projects. I was given the task to manually render the submission drawings for this project. Got onto it and started to color the drawings using food coloring mixed with water. Office hours ended and I had to pack up and continue tomorrow.

Was working while reading my novel at the same time when Amir was alerted by the smell of smoke. A SMALL portion of the office was about to caught fire today. Just the lights. I realized too that the office is not equipped with a fire alarm, a fire extinguisher and proper fire escape routes. I would probably be dead if the fire was bursting in flames. Amir switched of the power and everything toned down. Mr. Azhar wanted to remove the ceiling cover to inspect the damage. I had to remove the ceiling cover as everyone else could not reach the ceiling with ease. Luckily I did not get the 'shock' of my life. Mr. Azhar contacted an electrician to handle the problem right after.

Week 04: Lost that burning passion

Day 13

I was dragged back into the Amin Rafie Project. Multiple minor changes to be made. Besides that, I was introduced to the UM Project currently managed by Hady and Wafie. I was asked to produce a set of minimum ventilation calculation for the building.

Day 14

The day was spent on the Amin Rafie Project alone. I did the necessary changes brought up by Mr. Azhar. Changes included altering materials, refitting windows and introducing a safety feature into the house. I was told to design a layout for the bungalow as well. It was necessary for me so I could plan the position of the power source for interior works.

Day 15

Had a site visit to a client's house today. A refreshing move to get anyones spirits up. At site, we measured the dimension of the preexisting building which will have to be submitted to the authorities before we tear down the house. When we got back to the office I continued on the changes yet again.

Day 16

I was given the privilege to design a portion of the Amin Rafie building. Jafirul and Amir was at my disposal as I redesigned, altered and modified the building constantly. They had to follow up on my design which I changed frequently to fit building laws, logic and aesthetic of the design.

Day 17

Today I worked on my 3D model and switched back and forth with an AutoCad plan of the preexisting building. Spent the entire day touching up on some minor parts for the 3D model and drawings.

I left home early today in order to beat traffic. I had to send my brothers to school and meet up with my mother for breakfast. I tried a new road today according to my mother’s directions. As I finished breakfast and headed for my workplace I saw Mr. Azhar packing and ready to leave. He greeted me from his car and drove away.

I began to work slowly as I entered the office. I occasionally switch back and forth from the 3D model and the working drawings of the pre-existing plan. The remaining hours were spent explaining to Jafirul what needed to be changed.

I arrived at the workplace ridiculously early. Decided then to grab a drink at the nearest mamak stall and had my novel along with me. I shed a tear in public from reading a novel. Fortunately no one I knew was there.

I started to work on my 3D model from the changes given by Mr. Azhar. While working on the model, Amir came over and handed me the existing dimensions for the site and I was asked to produce working drawings from the dimensions. Upon completion, Mr. Azhar asked for the 3D model to be ready as soon as possible with more addition and changes to be made. As the engineer would be coming sometime today to collect the drawings, Jafirul and I had to work on the project as fast as possible. There were a few designs which needed attention to the building. Amir the senior architect and Jafirul said that they would follow my designs. After my design they proceeded to follow. I made numerous changes along the way and gave Jafirul and Amir a wonderful day changing their work.

Workplace has become more fun than I can imagine. While Mr. Azhar is not in the office we would talk loudly and joke amongst ourselves while working. During lunch time, Amir talked about the current issue with a developer whom refuses to pay our fees, the boss’s attitude and current projects. Mostly complaints but the talk turned out to be very informative. When we returned to the office and I was given the task to design one part of the building. Amir and Jafirul decided to follow my designs. It was a fun experience as I would have to follow dimensions given to me in the past but this time they will be following my instructions. Due to my lack of experience, I pointed out numerous changes every minute or so. The tedious task turned out to be fun with them laughing at every change that needed to be made. They were laughing not because of my lack of experience or because of insanity but for the fact that every amendment came after the other and in a bunch. I was literally giving them crap and we all enjoyed it.

As I was working on the Amin Rafie Project which I believe I will never escape from for the rest of my industrial training, Mr. Azhar came over to greet me and compliment me on my recent hairstyle.

As there would be complications and delays for the application for approval, Mr. Azhar suggested that we surveyed the site to see if it could improve our current condition for the submissions. We arrived at the site and had a short discussion with the client’s wife. It seems there were a few changes the client wanted and I would have to amend the 3D model and construction drawings. After our brief introduction and discussion, she handed us the keys to the house as we would require it for the survey. We drew elevations, sketched plans and measured the current condition of the site in order to produce a proper AutoCad drawing when we return. We took into account every single detail and the job was done in less then an hour. The task of producing the drawings was given to me. I was also told to include a standard guard house equipped with a toilet and prayer room.

As we arrived at the office, I started adjusting my 3D model and created a new file for the current site we just measured. Amir did an excellent job in detailing the plans and elevations we drafted out and I easily produced the drawings in a matter of hours. I have yet to include the guard house, refurbish the garden and slight changes to the wall.

I slowly worked on my 3D model before our departure to the client’s residence. When it was time to leave, Mr. Azhar asked me if we could use my car as he would not want to lose his precious parking slot. The drive was not for as the site was just 8km from the office. The road leading to the client’s residence was narrow and maneuvering had to be done with caution. Throughout the journey, Mr. Azhar was impressed with the maneuvers I did as he claimed he would not be able to the same. Along our journey, Amir and Mr. Azhar discussed about the Amin Rafie Project’s current status.

We were greeted by the client’s wife. She was very friendly. After our discussion, she warned us against mosquitoes but I disregarded her warnings as it seemed trivial. I was wrong however, there were hundreds of mosquitoes at the site and I killed fourteen of them while only being at the site for five minutes. The mosquitoes charged disregarding their life; they had balls but lacked brains. The current condition of the site seemed like a haunted house. As we entered, the first thing we saw was gigantic mirrors facing the front door. There were a few items that the previous owner left out as well which included an Astro dish, kitchen appliances, sanitary appliances and paintings. It truly was a haunted house. While we were busy measuring the site, Mr. Azhar was there just watching us and jumped into action occasionally. His actions were like an eager child; cute and excited from everything. As we were about to leave, Mr. Azhar asked if we would like to bring back the gigantic mirrors facing the front door. We had one for Mr. Azhar, one for the office and one for me. :D

After the survey, Mr. Azhar treated us to lunch and we talked about his background. When we arrived at the office, he gave me his parking slot and went to pick his son up from school. I entered the office and began work while reading my novel at the same time.

This is essential to determine the location of the services within the house. Mr. Azhar was telling me about it and said he would go through it with me tomorrow.

Wafie and I had lunch together with the absence of my other colleagues. We talked about numerous issues from the current statues of the firm, Mr. Azhar, Mr. Azman (the contract architect) to our personal lives. Wafie gave his opinion on the way Mr. Azhar was running his firm and the projects involved. I was amused yet amazed from what I heard. The topic was rather long and would probably require one whole post regarding this issue so I would rather not place it in today’s ‘Quote of the Day’.

Day 13: Unproductive = me

16th June

Greeted Mr. Azhar as we were about to enter the office. He mentioned about the meeting with the client regarding the Amin Rafie Project. All went well and the meeting was a success. The client did want slight changes to be made however, which would not require much work. Mr. Azhar again mentioned how the 3D model was very helpful in the presentation and he would probably want me to produce a 3D model for the UM Project as well.

Amin Rafie Project

The project was as good as over. However after meeting with the client, Mr. Azhar told me that there were a few changes that the client wanted. The slight changes included extension of a few windows, introduction of metal grids and change of material to the roof’s support. The whole alteration would not take much time if I placed full concentration to it. Mr. Azhar also requested that I sorted out the layout of furniture within the bungalow to enable us to strategize the location of the power switches. After doing so, detailing of materials would need to be carried out. I would have to make a call to the suppliers to make inquiries and order when the time comes. However, all the above mentioned by Mr. Azhar was not carried out today as I was focusing on another project.

UM Project

The UM Project involves an extension to the University Malaya. The project is led by Hady and assisted by Amir. Since I have completed the 3D model for Amin Rafie and was idle, I decided to offer my help in the project. Amir asked for me to calculate the percentage of ventilation the current drawings had. As the structure was a huge university and I had a lot of time to spare, the task was not completed immediately. As I was unfamiliar with the calculation methods, I often interrupted Amir and asked for assistance. Fortunately he was more then willing to help.

After receiving instructions on my next task I sat down in my booth and started opening files. I was not able to comprehend the method for the ventilation’s calculation and had to refer to another drawing from a different project. I was about to ask for help from my colleagues however the only one available was Wafie and he was unsure. Amir and Hady left the office for a site visit, Jafirul was extremely late and Mr. Azhar went out to meet a client. So I spent my time reading a book while waiting for someone to arrive. It was not until after lunch that Amir and Hady returned. After getting the necessary information I needed, I started. The task that was assigned to me could have been finished rather quickly, however I could not concentrate and decided to continue with my book. The day ended with me spending at least five hours on the book. Not a very good worker if you ask me.

Projects: Amin Rafie

The Amin Rafie Project which I was working on for three weeks. The initial stage only required me to produce a cross section view of the building which led to a few changes to the house. Various inconsistencies in the drawings led to the delay of the project. Finally in my second week, I was asked to produce a 3D model for the project. During the course of producing the 3D model, there were a few changes to the design as well which prolonged the completion of the model.

Week 03: Technical difficulties

Day 08

The decision to re-work on my 3D model saved lots of time throughout the entire week. With my previous model, it would take almost weeks to apply all the changes Mr. Azhar pointed out this week. Lack of concentration would have led to a messed up model or major delay on my behalf. Now I realized the necessity and convenience from grouping objects in Sketch Up. I am pretty sure this applies to other softwares as well. AutoCad and 3D Max for instance.

Day 09

Today was the longest day since the day I've started work. The computer was terribly slow that saving a file took more then 10 minutes. As a result, I accidentally slept on the job while waiting for my file to save completely which resulted me missing lunch. From then on I realized time could be spent more wisely during those times that the computer hangs or takes a VERY long time to process a command by bringing along magazines, newspapers, novels or books from home to read.

Day 10

From my lesson the previous day, I brought a magazine from house. Continued work as usual making changes and improvements which Mr. Azhar had pointed out. The changes was never able to complete that day due to the poor condition of the computer. Luckily I bought along my magazine. That day I've learned another lesson. It was due to the ridiculous amount of time I had to wait to save a file that I decided to just go for lunch and neglect saving, hoping that when I return I could just hop on the chair and continue. When I returned the computer had auto-restarted. The UM consultant's meeting held today was an unofficial meeting but was called to discuss the technical drawings problems and possible solutions which could be taken. Throughout the meeting, each consultant had a discussion on issues relating to them.

Day 11

Today, Mr. Azhar mentioned about the current status of the Amin Rafie Project. He told me to produce two sets of 3D images for the client and for the authorities. I suppose that was the only highlight of the day.

Day 12

Final stage which I assume I would be playing part in the Amin Rafie Project. The 3D model was complete and all that needed attention was for me to produce two sets of 3D images for separate reasons. After producing those images I followed Amir to MBPJ to have a quick discussion regarding the submission. From my own observation, it seems the authorities are dead serious on the format of the building submission. Slight error and your drawings will be rejected without going through it. The sufficient knowledge from the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) were also necessary as a building not following the standard requirement will also be rejected. A casual conversation with Amir had me realize the authority of an architect of different qualifications.

Amin Rafie Project

Working on the Amin Rafie Project on what would seem to be the final touch up. My model needed to be completed by the evening as Mr. Azhar will meet up with the client tomorrow and present the 3D model. Did not need to do much on the model as it is already completed. Just needed to touch up a little and render a few images at various camera angles. Mr. Azhar told me to produce another set of camera angles for the MBPJ discussion too. I asked Amir what time the meeting was and he replied not so soon. So I continued working on the images for the client when Amir suddenly told me to get ready for the MBPJ discussion five minutes before lift off. I haven't produce much images but have to left it at that.

MBPJ discussion

With my incomplete view of the building we left for the discussion with the authorities on the Amin Rafie Project. Along the way Amir told me the nature of the discussion. It was just to find out the minimum requirement for the set of drawings that we needed to produce in order to obtain the approval. During the discussion, they discussed about several issue relating to the changes to the setback, One Stop Center (OSC), Kebeneran Merancang (KM) and location. Apparently, the place we wanted to build the bungalow does not exist just because of a spelling mistake.

Arrived at the workplace from MBPJ and drove straight to college to take care of some things. After I got it sorted out, I rushed back to work to look into my 3D model before Mr. Azhar shows up. It was relaxing all the way after that. After completing and rendering the images, Mr. Azhar still haven't showed up. He had a meeting for the UM Project. So me and my colleagues do what we do best. I read my novel while my colleagues went around disturbing one another including me. I bought the huge packet of Mamee Monster and treated everyone. We talked about random childhood growing up with that particular snack and other stuff. I spent almost the rest of the day on my book and talking. Amir recomended a few architectural magazines for me to refer to if I wanted which were lying around in the office. At 1745, Mr. Azhar came into the office had a look at my work, complimented me, passed the company lunch menu to Amir, went through a few other stuff and rushed home.

Mr. Azhar popped by to see my progress and was either very happy and excited about it or he was already in a good mood before he saw my work. I could sense the excitement in his voice. However, there were once again a few more places that I needed to improve upon. After commenting on my work he told me that he would probably be meeting the client tomorrow or this weekend. My work will be presented to the client as the client would want to see a 3D model. After Mr. Azhar left, I continued working.

In the evening when Mr. Azhar dropped by again he took a peek at the model. He was still excited and told me that probably I should be the one presenting to the client. He asked if I was confident to present my work and that I should treat it as a critic session. I replied that I could while hesitating a little. Mr. Azhar asked Amir if the 3D model could be used as a presentation to the authorities (MBPJ) for the submission. Amir answered positively. My 3D model will now be used as part of the submission progress.

It was full speed ahead for me today. Sat on the chair when I arrived and never stood up except for toilet breaks and a cup of water. Mr. Azhar was in a very cheerful mood today I don't know why. He told us that there will be a company lunch next Monday. Wonder how that will be like. Left the earliest today at 1800 sharp because I didn't want to miss an appointment due to bad traffic. As usual my colleagues were at each other's back before I left, disturbing one another. Amir even asked if I smoked which is the second time he is asking. He told me that I should smoke and as its cool and all the architects are doing it. Probably he thinks that I am still a child. . .

The existing slab was difficult to work on as information whether the new slab would be able to set properly on the existing slab without complications. Therefore, Mr. Azhar proposed for the new structure to float above the existing slab to avoid unnecessary troubles.

A split second decision before I rushed out to work was to grab an issue of the Reader's Digest. I managed to kill time with it in my car before Mr. Azhar arrived to open the up office.

Amin Rafie Project

I have roughly completed the 3D model of the building. I am now working on the landscape surrounding the building. After showing my progress to Mr. Azhar, there were a few changes he would like me to make. The minor changes should only take a few hours to accomplish however, due to the current condition of the computer in the office I was unable to complete those changes today. Half the day was spent waiting for the command to take place. Saving the project was a nightmare. It takes 5-10 minutes to save the file. To top that, I had to save one in my thumb drive and the firm's computer. When lunch time came, I thought it would be safe to leave my computer and continue later. It would be troublesome to have save and wait for it so I left for lunch without saving. To my horror when I returned, my work was gone. The computer had restarted automatically for some windows update. But at the end of the day I was still unable to complete the changes due to technical difficulties.

UM Project consultant's meeting

Mr. Azhar conducted an unofficial consultant's meeting today and asked me to attend. At the meeting, those present were Mr. Azhar (project leader), Hady (architect), Mr. ? (engineer), Pn. Rabiah (C&S) and me (trainee). The nature of the meeting was to discuss the updates/ problems and changes that needed attention in the technical drawings. Mr. Azhar told me that the previous official consultant's meeting bear no results as most of the consultant's did not do their job as they should. This meeting ensured what had to be carried out without referring to the minutes or agenda.

The few issues raised were regarding the existing and new slab, a steel ramp, the gutter, TNB sub-station's height level, civil works and submission requirements. Most of the solutions to the problems were suggested by Mr. Azhar even for the engineering department. The engineer did not seem to be confident to produce any solutions. At the end of the meeting, Mr. Azhar told me of his disappointment and frustration with the consultants for not accomplishing their job and not taking the job seriously. Even the technical consultant did not bother to show up.

The decision to bring along a Reader's Digest to work was a mark of brilliance. Most of the time when my computer went into 'hanging' mode, i resorted to reading the magazine. As a result, most of the time I was caught reading the magazine in my booth by the boss. He did not say anything but I am pretty sure that killed work ethics. What else was I to do while waiting?

At 1600, Aslia noticed that all the ice in the fridge melted. Apparently, someone turned off the power to the machine. Joke of the day, how many architects does it take to drain melted ice from a fridge. The answer would be, every single architect in my firm. A grand total of six including me. One was to hold the door open, the other was to hold the tray, the other was to drain the water using a tupperware, the rest as onlookers, support and demoralizers.

The 3D model of the Amin Rafie Project is finally completed. Every bit of columns, beams, truss, windows, doors, walls, extended RC slab, roof and stair is now in place. The matter of detailing however has yet to be finalized. The 3D model still has to go through Mr. Azhar's inspection before I can render. What was done the entire day today was to build up the roof of the bungalow. The computer in the office is no longer able to support much from my sketch up file, every single mouse movement takes at least 5 seconds to register. Saving the file takes up to 15 minutes of my time. Currently, I will be working on the landscape that Mr. Azhar requested for me to work on. I will be proposing a design for the waterfall aquarium and have been working on that since 1300.

As I've mentioned, the computer at workplace have been wasting most of my time. It seems the software I am using is just too much of a burden to the computer. Most of my time was used waiting for the command to take action as a result. This could be a blessing in disguise as work hours seem to run faster then usual. However, at one time I had to wait 15 minutes for my project to save and that was during lunch break. I dozed off. Missed my one and only chance to get out of the workplace and eat. The remaining hours were spent sleepy, hungry and uncomfortable.

Woke up at the earliest time today at 0600. School holidays were over and I had to send my brothers and cousin back to school/ college. Because of that reason, I decided to leave home early to beat the mother of all traffic jams which were at the junction of my brothers school + the Federal highway + the NPE highway + LDP highway. I was either fortunate or unfortunate but I still managed to reach my workplace at 0800 with lots of time to burn. . . good thing I brought the papers.

Amin Rafie Project

Was working on the Amin Rafie Project last night when I noticed that the 3D model I started was messy and unorganized. With the current template it would take hours just for minor modifications. It was then that I decided to restart on the template. That meant I had less then 24 hours to work on a 3D model that I took roughly 3-4 days to build. Things didn't turn out that bad as I already have the dimensions, techniques and settings ready on standby.

It was 0830 when I reached my workplace the next day and started working on the 3D model which I restarted the night before. Layers after layers that I produced turned out more organized and efficient. Luckily I managed to complete the model to the point I was when Mr. Azhar showed up and had a look at my work. He pointed out a few changes I had to make to the 3D model. The decision to rework on my model was the right choice as the minor modifications took faster then usual to correct. I think I wouldn't be over exaggerating if I claimed that I would be able to completely finish the 3D model in another 3 days to come or less if there were no more changes to deal with.

Mr. Azhar came over to check on my 3D model, after pointing out on what I should change he told me that he would be meeting the client of the project somewhere this week. That should be a hint for me to speed up my working progress. I was also told to speak to Amir and Jafirul on the submission progress to keep me updated. The project seems to be reaching its submission process. After that happens all we need to do is wait for the authorities approval which puts us in pending mode.

Week 02: Routine

Day 05

Coming back from my vacation, there were a few changes to the project that were under me. The Amin Rafie Project was assigned to Jafirul while I was away. Therefore, I continued to concentrate on the 3D model while he was on the drawings. Not long after, Mr. Azhar asked me to attend a consultant's meeting for the UM project. This meeting was a little more serious compared to the Amin Rafie consultant's meeting. From the meeting I've learned how a project involving consultants from different firms progress. An interesting experience indeed.

Day 06

Today, much time was spent on the Amin Rafie Project. Work hours at the office has become routine and I am going through the same repeated cycle for the past six days. A little boring but I will still keep going as long as there are interesting projects, meetings and site visits which I could attend or tag along.

Day 07

Had my official first site visit from work today. We visited Bukit Tunku which is suppose to be a place where land is reserved for only the wealthy, famous or a Prime Minister. The visit was very beneficial as I managed to pick up problems relating to the site. There will always be a slight difference between a drawing and the site itself which the architect will have to make a split second decision on the spot. The visit was different from the Building Construction 2 site visit as from our course, we were only required to look into the construction process or materials and not any internal problems which happens during construction or relating to communication problems. Once again, in the office I continued on the Amin Rafie Project.

Counting from the number of days, it has been one week since I started work. I am getting used to the morning wakeup calls, the traffic congestions and daily routine of turning everything on in the office everyday. The habit of staring at the clock and counting down before the hand strikes 1800 is beginning to kick in. Nonetheless, the working life is still fun and exciting. While working on the 3D model of the Amin Rafie Project, Mr. Azhar came over to my booth and told me that he was going for a site visit to look into the Tunku Project and asked me to come along.

Amin Rafie Project

Started working on the windows and doors of the 3D model today. I realized not too long ago that grouping objects can help hasten the working process but will somehow lag an old computer. Mr. Azhar came over to check on my work and since it is about 70% completed, the shape had already take place. There were a few comments on what I had to change and what I could include into the building. Later he told me about the landscaping in front of the bungalow. I did not realized I was supposed to sketch up the landscape as well. But since he just mentioned it, I got the message. If I were to work on the 3D model over the weekend then I would probably be able to start on a new project this coming Monday. I also learned how to mirror objects in sketch up with the help from Hady.

Tunku Project

According to the task list, the Tunku Project is under my jurisdiction. However since the project is already under construction, I was unaware of the current status of the project nor have I seen the drawings relating to the project. It was until this morning, Mr. Azhar asked me to accompany him to the site. At the site, Mr. Azhar pointed out the key issues on the project. The project involved an expansion from the existing bungalow.

Due to communication problems between the contractor and the engineer, there were numerous delays and troubles Mr. Azhar had to deal with which included concrete inspection, beam dimension change and probably more. The site was located an a hill overseeing the KL view which included the Twin Towers, the Maxis Tower and more sky scraping buildings. I probably would not be needed to look into the drawings of the project since the construction process is already underway at about 30% completion.

Along the way to Bukit Tunku, Mr. Azhar and I had a long conversation relating to the Tunku Project. The problems concerning the engineer and contractor, disturbing construction issues and the current progress of the project. I too had a share of questions to ask. The journey was as beneficial as the site visit itself. Once the visit was over, the time spent in the office was the usual sketching up of the Amin Rafie Project. It is a Friday, by 1600 all my colleagues already slowed down to an almost standstill.

I am now going through the same routine every time I step into the office. Check in my attendance, look over the corridor to see if my boss is already in, turn on the power to the lights, air conditioning and the water supply then start work immediately.

Amin Rafie Project

Started on the ground floor of the 3D model. Slight detailing included but then I decided to move on to the first floor to see more results. The staircase underwent some modifications based on Mr. Azhar's comments. A few minutes into work then Mr. Azhar came over to my table and told me I got the merged drawings wrong. He pointed out the difference and adjustments to be made. At that moment I felt frustrated. Not because of him telling me where I went wrong but because of my inability to carry out the task efficiently. After pointing out the mistakes, Mr. Azhar realized my workload was quite a burden then he decided to pass some of my workload to Jafirul. I should be feeling relieved to have a chunk of my work taken of however, I wouldn't get a chance to correct my errors much to my disappointment.

So now I have full time to concentrate on my 3D model alone. The house has finally taken shape after much work done to it. Whats left out now is the detailing, furnitures and more finishes. If the model were to be completed I might opt to work on the existing building as well if necessary. If all goes well I might display my 3D model up or something.

The day went by just like any other day. However, due to the half salary received the previous day, most of the time was spent talking about half pays and petrol hikes. Although they were unrelated to one another, the topics somehow merged and continued alongside each other. The routine football talk came along soon after and it was a matter of time before it was included into the half pay and petrol hike conversations as well. A colleague of mine started to incorporate the conversation topic into the songs we listen to every single day. Sitting there by my booth as an eaves dropper was hilarious.

I spent the whole day in front of the computer and not budging except for a cup of water and toilet break. I did not even go out for lunch while strongly glued to my computer screen. If the computer doesn't lag I would probably be done with the model by now.

Mr. Azhar said this in a consultant's meeting when the C&S engineers asked Mr. Azhar to issue a letter. Mr. Azhar told them they should produce the letter instead and if the task is delayed any further, as the leader of the project he will then issue the letter to the surveyor.

Day 05: Back to work

My three days of vacation is finally over and now its time to get back to work. Mr. Azhar was already in the office when I arrived. This time before I did anything, I quickly checked in. Went to Mr. Azhar's room to see if there was any changes in the past two days. Mr. Azhar said he handed the task over to Jafirul in my absence and there were a few design changes to the Amin Rafie Project. I would need to catch up with Jafirul on the changes while I was away. Had a short conversation about the terrible Karak highway accident the day before. Soon after, I continued from where I left of on the 3D model on the Amin Rafie Project.

Amin Rafie Project

Continued sketching up the Amin Rafie Project from where I left of. Mr. Azhar told me that the 3D model would have to be the end product therefore I made some minor changes according to the adjustments made while I was away. The ground floor of the model is almost completed however, it would only be the raw product. Detailing and finishes will be added after the 3D model is complete.

Mr. Azhar asked me to produce an autocad drawing of the merged existing building and the soon to be built Amin Rafie building. The previous drawings were outdated with the few changes he made in the design during my absence.

UM Project consultant's meeting

Was asked to attend a consultant's meeting by Mr. Azhar today. The meeting consisted of Mr. Azhar (project leader), Hady (architect), Pn. Harliati (quantity surveyor), Nor Fadzilah (civil engineer), Pn. Zaini (structural engineer) and me (trainee). The UM Project involves a university and is probably the biggest project under aaza. The meeting went through previous meeting minutes as a recap to what they have discussed that would require attention.

In the meeting Mr. Azhar urged the C&S (Civil and Structural) engineers to hasten their pace as numerous items brought up in the previous meeting was not given attention. The delay is affecting the speed of the project.

Lack of cooperation from the UM surveyor to provide more detailed surveys had delayed the project process as it was essential to get those information. Suggestions for a 300x300 beam to stay as it would support load by C&S was raised. However, the beam would affect the architecture of the building. Mr. Azhar suggested a 400x200 beam instead to reduce the obstacle on the walkway.

Several other drawing corrections were pointed out by Mr. Azhar. Another notable issue was to maintain A TNB substation while construction process begun. The clients did not want the substation touched although advise by Mr. Azhar. The substation powers the existing area and if anything were to happen to it during the construction process then hospitals, universities and other facilities in the area will lose power as there is no backup generator.

It was 1700 when Mr. Azhar left and Ms. Aslia took out everyone's pay for the month. It was payday. My colleagues then lined up and took turns to receive their pay. Moments later screams echoed in the air. It was neither screams of joy nor pleasure. They got half pay. Production then stopped. Everyone was talking about what to do next. Among the interesting suggestions included going back home, finding a new job, suicide, prank calls and more. I had no idea a long month's pay is what every architect looks forward to in their life. A sad peek into my future life unfortunately.

Week 01: Great start

Day 01

First day of work was an enjoyable one. Although project did not start pouring in immediately, I had an insight on the working environment that I would be facing through observation. Seeing working drawings for the very first time excited me yet frightened me. I kept asking the same question to myself; 'would I be able to produce that?" However, I soon realize that the drawings were not all that complicated. The few basic knowledge one would need to acquire have been thought to us in our core subjects previously for instance, design communication, auto cad and design studio classes.

The entire day was spent observing and simple chores that would not require any amount of intelligence. By Day 01, I made it a point to remember and introduce myself to all seven of my future colleagues.

Day 02

Today, I started receiving important tasks which would require immediate attention. My day was spent in front of the computer completing a cross section of a building. Due to lack of auto cad training these past few months, things started slow. However, I managed to get the cross section of both views done the very same day. Inconsistencies in the drawings and lack of proper formatting from the previous architect delayed completion of the work.

Day 03

Resumed the Amin Rafie Project. Adjustments for the drawings took longer than expected. Almost the whole day was spent on the working drawings alone. After almost satisfactory results, I showed the drawings to the senior architect in the firm for inspection. He pointed out a few errors and design modification that I should take note of. Immediately right after, I got into adjusting the drawings again.

Day 04

Started the day with continuous modifications and adjustments to my previous errors. After completion, I started on a 3D version of the drawings. Constantly changing between re-modifications and the 3D model. A consultant's meeting was held to discuss about the project with an engineer. I attended the meeting and presented the drawings to the engineer. After the meeting I was asked to produce drawing changes that the boss had in mind.

Reached the office early and had to wait a while. Five minutes before working time and Mr. Azhar's shadow is nowhere in sight. Peculiar indeed. Jafirul arrived earlier and we had a very very short conversation while waiting. Amir showed up later and instead of Mr. Azhar, he opened the office. Apparently he is the backup.

Amin Rafie Project

Started work right away as preparation for the consultant's meeting which will take place in the afternoon with my drawings as the main event. Asked Amir to inspect my work. Found out much on standard detailing for banglos. For instance,

standard kitchen tiles: 200x250
standard exterior doors: 2400 (in height)
plastered ceiling: 300 (offset from top)

and much more. After adjustments I started sketchup on the building. Mr. Azhar came in to have a quick look at my drawings before the meeting.

After the consultant's meeting, Mr. Azhar requested for me to come up with some drawings changes he sketched.

Consultant's Meeting

Attended a consultant's meeting today consisting of Mr. Azhar (architect), Vincent (engineer) and me (cheap labor). Vincent is an engineer from an engineering firm and has worked with Mr. Azhar on the Amin Rafie Project before. Now, Mr. Azhar would like to seek his assistance once more for the current project. Mr Azhar started by explaining the nature of the project and the difficulties which will come along with it. The project is based on house merging and there is a structural challenge posed. A roof support was in the way of the renovations. Removing the component would be equivalent to removing the roof which would be troublesome and messy. Besides that, they had a discussion on the relocation of a septic tank because the project would require the use of that spot. The discussion ended with both parties agreeing on a site visit.

Mr. Azhar came in late to work today. After the Friday prayers, he appeared while I was on sketchup. Mr. Azhar asked if I could produce some drawings on the changes he had in mind. I got right to the job as it seemed urgent. Before starting on the drawings I pointed out the first floor plan changes which he missed. One hour before check out time, I went to look for Mr. Azhar to inquire about the drawing plans. He had already went home so I had to ask Amir instead. After returning to my booth I got temporarily bored and started to browse the web on online mangas. Went home right after I completed my drawing changes on left them on Mr. Azhar's table.

PS: I forgot to check-in and out of the office today. . . which would be equivalent to attendance -1

Mr. Azhar said this when he told me that I would be working with an Interior Designer on the Amin Rafie Project. The task was to ensure that the Interior Designer follows the guide set by the architect. The architect needs to be aware of every changes in the project. . . even the minor ones.

Day 03: Mistakes

Reached my office at 0800. I have come to the point where I can't decide either to be three minutes late for work or an hour earlier. Greeted Mr. Azhar again when he was about to open the office. Had a short conversation with him in the office soon after in which he talked about the role of an architect. He also mentioned that I would need to work with an Interior Designer on the Amin Rafie Project which I will be supervising the Interior Designer's work . Besides that, he said that there would be a meeting later in the afternoon on the Amin Rafie Project and since I am part of it I should attend with my drawings. Later, I applied for a leave of absence coming Monday and Tuesday and he approved of it without much questions ask or trouble. Once Amir came in, we went through the mistakes in the drawings and adjustments which I would have to make.

Amin Rafie Project

Major adjustments to be made in the drawings concerning the format, designs and specifications. Almost thirty minutes into the briefing then I started work. Changing all the necessary details were tedious and I was very disappointed with the drawings by the previous architect. At one point I wanted to redraw everything from scratch but came to my senses almost immediately. After the adjustments on his drawings, I had to work on the adjustments on my drawings instead. The whole day was once again spent on the computer's screen. It was fortunate that the engineer postponed the meeting to tomorrow afternoon as it gives me more time to work on the drawings which Mr. Azhar stated that some were wrong. Stayed in the office until 1850 working on the drawings. I have no choice but to bring my work home with me. . .

In the morning during the short conversation with Mr. Azhar, he said that most of his site visits were on the weekends. Looks like I will be working on the weekends. After lunch, I went to Mr. Azhar's room as he wanted to pass me a task list. According to that list I have six projects under me, some which are pending, waiting for approval and on-going. Besides that, the talked about engineering related topics probably because an engineer would be coming in for a meeting which was postponed.

Nasty engineering related work which includes horrid calculations on just one simple beam, construction problems associated with stingy contractors and the significance in an architect's drawings.

After hearing that I felt more of an architect than a student . Mr. Azhar told me that when he was looking at my progress and I pointed out the few inconsistencies in the building. He acknowledged that and told me he too made a few changes to the building because the client wanted something futuristic. After the ecstasy from what he said earlier dies out I'm sure I will suffer from the workload.

Day 02: Late for work

I underestimated the notorious Federal and LDP highway traffic congestion from my experience the previous day. Bad move. Left home at 0800 only to discover that the congestion can had a turn for the worse. The highway was so packed that I could have reached my workplace faster by walking backwards and blindfolded guided by a walking stick. A split second decision, I turned into Subang to take the NPE leading to LDP. Worst decision of my life. The traffic was just as bad. All hell was set loose when i discovered they blocked the road and an illegal turn was a no go zone with three traffic policemen on standby. Desperate, I decided to take an all or nothing gamble; make a U-turn which will burn probably an hour or use some random road I have never used or seen in my life. I had ten minutes before working hour starts. . .

I went for the road not taken holding on to my recent principle; 'All roads lead somewhere. . .'. Arrived thirteen minutes later. . . three minutes late.

Amin Rafie Project

Took over all projects from Mr. Azman. Got straight to work on the Amin Rafie Project which will need me to handle cross section drawings and specifications. Workload was bearable once I browse through the plan and elevation drawings. However, things started to get tedious once I noticed several inconsistency between the plans and elevations; measurements were off and labels were wrong. The task then dragged on and on and on. Two hours before it was time to check out, Mr. Amir kindly told me that the formatting was wrong. Apparently, the previous architect did not follow the firm's standard format much to my horror. I had to redo what has been done. After the cross section and specifications were done I handed them over to Mr. Amir for inspection. He will go through on what I need to improve on tomorrow.

The whole task on the Amin Rafie Project lasted throughout the whole day. During the course of which, Mr. Azhar came up to me to see how I was doing. He told me he wouldn't be around much because he would have to go out for a meeting. On the project I was doing, he told me he would want to show a 3D model of the building to the client instead of just drawings. I told him I could sketch up the building after I am done with the cross section and specifications. Hope that will be soon, 2D drawings are getting boring.

Soon Mr. Azhar left. A few hours later, Ms. Azlia came over to my booth and told me to stop working and relax. I returned a smile and said I just needed to get this done with. Lunch was interesting as my colleagues had a conversation about stone-age architects. The day ended with me staring at the screen almost the whole day I spent in the office.

PS: I took over Mr. Azman's booth, stationaries, files, computer, notes, books, works and. . . rubbish (not a very tidy person )

Woke up early and left home at 0700 to avoid the notorious traffic congestions that would obscure the Federal and LDP highway. Unfortunately, I reached my work area WAY earlier than expected at 0745. With nothing to do I had to 'slothed' in the car until 0830. Decided to pay my parking ticket and saw Mr. Azhar aka boss opening up the office. Greeted him soon after and had a short talk while walking up towards the office. Work started then. . .

Kampung Tunku PJ

Contract architect, Mr. Azman's last day at work. I will take over his job from tomorrow onwards and continue section drawings and specifications. A short brief was given by Mr. Azman on what I should do and follow. Noticed something amiss in the cross section. . . will bring that up tomorrow.

Terrace House

Given site plans for a terrace house in Terengganu. The site plans was regarding a fire hydrant radius which were ordered to be changed by the firemen. Spent almost 2 hours scraping off the pre-existing radius with a razor.

Tunku Project

Mr. Azhar shared construction problems he had to deal with on the Tunku Project. Construction manager and engineer were not on talking terms. Each refused to talk to the other. The engineer made a big mistake by placing a 650mm beam when it should be 500mm. Mr. Azhar told me his solution and how we have to acknowledge these kind of construction problems in the field.

Mixed Building

Mr. Amir showed me working drawings related plans, sections, elevations and site plan. Complicated drawings but i came through. . . except for the calculative parts. Mr. Amir went through with me one by one in areas i was unfamiliar with.

Mr. Azhar came in and said the drawings would be colored soon before submitting to the authorities.

Me: So what software will you be using to color the drawings?
Azhar: We will not be using any software
Me: Color pencils?
Azhar: Water colors
Me: . . . . .

For a split second I thought that was sarcasm. But then he had a straight face to it.

Terreal Clay Roofing Tiles & Thermal Insulation

A catalog that Mr. Azhar received. He told me to look through it because it is very useful and might come in handy when he brings me along for a site visit to the banglo. Contained information on high quality thermal insulation and roof clay apparently.

It is now 1720. Fourty more minutes before I walk out the door. I don't foresee anymore work/advice/task/random talk/information coming my way. The boss left the office and the remaining 33.3% of the staff are on network games. I am sitting in the booth next to them and I can hear them scream and the Malay and Manchester United's music is blasting. I bet they are playing some medieval game no doubt. So this is what grown up men do at work when their wives are at home with the children.

Roughly what Ive learned/gain today would be a free Nippon paint pen from a client, realizing my colleagues are just like teenagers or younger, the secretary stares at me while wondering how I am doing (feel a little awkward or cool. . . I couldn't tell the difference) and free water by the dispenser right next to me. Not a bad start. Mr. Azhar will be giving me REAL work tomorrow. I'd better go home and study~
